How to create a Doctolib alert to be notified of new available slots

The Doctolib alert is based on a precise mechanism: it is linked to a previously confirmed appointment and signals the slots that become available due to cancellations before the scheduled date. It is not a general monitoring of a practitioner, but a conditional notification related to an existing slot. Understanding this logic prevents the search for a button that does not exist as long as no appointment has been made.

Technical prerequisites: why the Doctolib alert requires a confirmed appointment

The functioning of the cancellation alert surprises many patients. One expects to be able to monitor a doctor like one monitors a product out of stock, by leaving their email address and waiting for a notification. Doctolib does not work that way.

The alert is necessarily attached to a previously booked appointment. As long as no slot has been confirmed in your patient agenda, the activation button does not appear anywhere. The platform then compares the slots that become available with the date of your current appointment: if an earlier slot opens up, you receive a notification.

This functioning has a direct consequence: for a first appointment with a specialist whose schedule shows several weeks of waiting, the process first involves booking the nearest available slot, even if it is far away, and then activating the alert right after. Those who wish to create a Doctolib availability alert without a prior appointment find themselves blocked, lacking an anchor point in the system.

Activating the cancellation alert on Doctolib: the two possible paths

Activation occurs at two distinct moments, depending on whether you have just made an appointment or if you return to your patient space later.

From the confirmation page

Right after validating an appointment, Doctolib displays a confirmation page. If the chosen slot is more than three days away from the current date, an “Activate alert” button appears on this page. A simple click is enough. The three-day condition is logical: below this timeframe, the chances of an earlier slot becoming available and the patient being able to attend are too low to justify a notification.

From the “My appointments” section

If you closed the confirmation page without activating the alert, nothing is lost. Log in to your Doctolib account, go to the “My appointments” section, select the relevant appointment, and activate the alert from the summary page. The link contained in the appointment confirmation email leads directly to this page.

The concrete steps:

  • Log in to Doctolib (mobile app or website) and open “My appointments”
  • Select the appointment for which you want to monitor cancellations
  • Click on “Activate alert” if the appointment is more than three days away
  • Check that push notifications are enabled on your device (a point detailed in the next section)

Push notifications and Doctolib alert: the setting that most patients forget

Activating the alert in Doctolib does not guarantee receiving the notification in real-time. The cancellation alert also depends on the push notifications of your device. If these are disabled for the Doctolib app, the alert remains silent. You will only see it by manually opening the app or checking your emails, with a delay that may be enough to miss the released slot.

On an iPhone, the setting is found in Settings, then Notifications, then Doctolib. On an Android device, the path goes through Settings, then Apps, then Doctolib, then Notifications. In both cases, allow notifications and sound alerts to maximize responsiveness.

A slot released due to cancellation often fills up within minutes. The email notification, viewed late, frequently arrives too late. The push on smartphone remains the most reliable channel for this type of alert.

Cases where the Doctolib alert is not available

The activation button for the alert does not appear in all situations. Two documented cases are worth knowing before spending time searching for an absent option.

  • The AP-HP schedules do not offer the cancellation alert. Appointments made through the hospital calendars of the Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris follow a different management circuit, incompatible with this feature.
  • Appointments set directly at the office (by phone or in person) and then visible in your Doctolib space also do not allow for alert activation. Only appointments made online via the platform are eligible.
  • Appointments scheduled within less than three days do not display the button, even if they were made online.

If you consult a hospital practitioner at the AP-HP or if your appointment was created at the office, the Doctolib cancellation alert simply is not an option. The only alternative in this case is to call the secretary to express your interest in case of cancellation.

Limits of the system and queue management

The cancellation alert is not sent to all patients waiting simultaneously. Only the five patients with the most distant appointments receive the notification when a slot becomes available. This prioritization means that if your appointment is already relatively close, you will not be alerted, even with the alert activated.

This limited queue mechanism explains why some patients never receive an early slot proposal despite having an active alert. The system favors those who have been waiting the longest, which makes sense but is rarely explained.

One last point to keep in mind: the alert remains active until your appointment or until you manually deactivate it. If you find a slot by another means and cancel your initial appointment, the alert disappears with it. No need to deactivate it separately.
